Vasantha Senanayeke risks losing Parliament seat
Polonnaruwa MP Vasantha Senanayake has been expelled from the United National Party for expressly criticizing party Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has confirmed.
Kariyawasam said that the party “followed procedure,” in expelling Senanayake and “would be writing to the Secretary-General of Parliament informing him of our decision.”
This means Senanayake could lose his Parliamentary seat.
According to the UNP Constitution criticizing a party Presidential candidate during the campaign constitutes grounds for expulsion.
During the October crisis when Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mahinda Rajapaksa were jousting as to who held a majority in Parliament and Horse-trading was rampant, Senanayake flipped from one party to the other twice. This set a record in the Sri Lankan Parliament for a Member changing sides the most number of times in the shortest period.
Despite being a State Minister Senanayake has a poor record in Parliament according to Manthri.lk the website that tracks MPs participation in debates, votes and attendance.
He is a grandson of Don Stephen Senanayake, the Father of the Nation.
