Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa can enact law against bond scam perpetrators
At a media briefing held today, the New Wings organization raised questions regarding ongoing investigations into the bond scam.
Attorney-at-Law Shanika Silva, Steering Committee Member of New Wings:
“Parliament was prorogued the day before COPE was to meet to discuss the Forensic Audit Report. Future action on the forensic audit report will have to be taken by the new COPE committee.
As the Finance Minister, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is able to refer the report to the Attorney General and request him to take action.
However, Mahinda Rajapaksa is yet to mention this report. If they persist in failing to enforce the law with regards to the bond scam, having campaigned on that topic, then the people will give them the same treatment that they gave the good governance government.”
Eranga Gunasekara, Steering Committee Member of the New Wings stated that usual politicking is continued by the current government as well. He questioned whether the promise of bringing the bond scam perpetrators was a mere election promise?
He confidently stated that Ranil Wickremesinghe, Kabir Hashim, Malik Samarawickrema and Ravi Karunanayake were engaged in this infamous act and the law must be enacted against them.
Vraie Cally Balthazar, Steering Committee member of the New Wings Movement stated the Minister of Finance, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has the authority to call for legal action, despite the status in Parliament and despite the functionality of the COPE committee.
She stated that the process should be expedited as it is the righteous duty for the citizens of this country.
“So we believe that those who are accused can and should be brought to justice, for the misappropriation of public funds and there need not be any further delays” she added.
